Check to be sure the kickdown cable is not adjusted too tight. The end should actually have a fraction of an inch of slack at idle when all is adjusted correctly.

Is your rough shift just 1-2? There's a nylon ball in the upper valve body that wears and allows too fluid to bypass the accumulator piston. It's an easy in-car repair for someone familiar with transmission valve body service. There's info in the 700-900 FAQs on it.
