Sorry, but I don't know what a drift is...?

And are you sayingI should apply the direction of the hammer-wacking towards the flooring of the car, or in the opposite direction towards the roof of the cabin?

Is the whacking primarily just to loosen the surfaces between the splines of the column and the steering wheel, then it will just slide off the rest of the way?
