'71 142E Wiring 140-160

In a Jan. 24th. post, John Harvey mentioned that, when doing an M40/41 for BW35 swap, you should jump the black and the white wires that originally went down to the AT neutral safety switch. Studying my wiring diagram, I concluded, (maybe wrongly, for I'm an electrical nincompoop) that jumping these two wires -- the black appears to come from the starter relay, and the white leads to the backup lights -- would make the backup lights come on every time I started the car. (Correction joyfully accepted.) Further puzzling made me realize that what is the starter relay with the BW35, is the backup light relay with the M40/41, which makes me believe that the following procedure would give better results:

1) Jump the blue/yellow and green wires that go to the strater/backup light relay to connect the starter solenoid directly to the ignition switch, as is the normal MT set up. (First relay from the firewall on the driver's side inner fender)

2) Connect the black wire, coming down in the harness-branch that went to the BW35 neutral safety switch, to the backup light switch on the M40/41.

3) Connect the white wire in that harness-branch to the starter/backup light relay where the green wire used to be attached, i.e., the one going to the starter solenoid. (Different colors were used in different years.)

4) Connect the blue/yellow wire; the third wire in that harness-branch, and which used to feed power from a terminal on the rear window defogger relay (next to the starter/backup lights relay) to the BW35 neutral safety switch; to the starter/backup light relay at the terminal where the other blue/yellow wire used to go before you jumped it to the green starter solenoid wire.

This should bring the wiring back to normal for MT cars and eliminates the need for adding a backup light relay.

I haven't done the complete hook-up yet, and to any of you whose eyes have not totally glazed over by now, i.e, people who are actually going to do the swap; I will appreciate critique and correction before I "let out the smoke" as Cameron is fond of saying.
