It sounds like the metal bulb holders are shorting against the tailgate. If the tabs break off the plastic part it doesn't stay in far enough to keep the metal from touching. I had to wrap mine with elect. tape & push it in to keep it from shorting to ground on the tailgate. Of course the real fix is new or good used assemblies,but this works untill you find them.
