The M47 has a steel plug inside the knob where the OD trans shift switch would go. The rattle is when the outer plastic knob loostens up on the sleeve that secures it to the shaft. I put enough Goop in there over the years to stuff a chicken! Finally sprang for the new knob & cap from Volvo ($36 less 20% for the Volvo for Life coupons!). The new caps are a different plastic and design than the older ones and will not crack. Worth the money.
