Temp gauge sensor 700 1987

Interesting...a year ago I was getting a jumping temp guage needle. I replaced the engine wiring harness and in the process, the connector to the (now I know) knock sensor crumbled apart. Ever since then, the temp guage has been dead, so I had assumed that that was the sensor that had crumbled. So now I have a couple more questions: Apparently, I've been happily running the car for over a year without the knock sensor hooked up; I've even passed emmissions inspections with flying colors. So, now that I know what it is, I'll order a new connector, but what will hooking it up improve?

Do the temp sensors go bad? I like to think that it's not a wiring harness problem since I went through so much work to replace the harness. Any troublshooting advice?
