I had a burning oil smell forever in my 122. Sometimes there would even be clouds behaind me. Turned out the OD (I put a M41 in) was leaking oil onto the exhaust when engaged. That's why there were never any puddles.

Does your car ping when it smokes when you put your foot into it? That can be a sign of bad rings. Or so I've been told.
