Haven't played with that vintage in a long time, but I suspect that either the electrical component at the back of the assembly is shot, or the keyed part of the assembly is really worn. Hope it's the former! Might try seeing if you can get at it to disassemble and inspect/clean? Good luck!
BTW, if you ignition key is on a heavy ring with a lot of other keys and crap, over time it will wear the lock cylinder to the point that strange things will happen. BTDT
