Ian,

I have seen the wiring to the pump inside the tank loosen at the connector on the pump cause an intermittent problem. and years ago I saw a pump that would quit pumping fuel as it was lifted out of a bucket of fuel during a physical test in the garage don't know why it did this and never found out just replaced it. good luck.
