I've found the throttle position switch connector unplugged a couple of times on our 88 740... at least before I replaced the engine mounts.
Look for a loose plug there, driver's side of the engine. It could be disconnected without actually pulling off the plug completely.
A dirty throttle body is another possibility- especially if it's so dirty that the throttle switch doesn't make contact, since it can't close fully.
The job requires a $1 throttle body gasket and a can of carburetor cleaner, pretty easy all things considered.
