700 upper strut mounts require the spring to be compressed for removal. I don't have any experience with Bilstein's on Volvo's, but my '89 765 Tic has Boge Turbo-Gas shocks, ipd poly strut bushings, and new rubber everywhere else. The ride is as stiff as I would ever want in a street car.

Just my $.02, everyone has their own preference.
