Buy or not? S90-V90

Well I really like my 960, but I don't think I'd buy one for my daughter. I think they are nicely appointed cars, drive well, and have good power. I am a little paranoid about engine problems, and, they have interference engines that can be seriously damaged if the timing belt breaks. So they need fairly regular maintenance which is somewhat more expensive than the 4 cylinder cars.

I think that people on the list either really like their 960s or really hate them, and it depends largely on whether they have a car with lots of problems or not. So, read up on what the potential problems are (look here for some ideas: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/BuyingUsed7xx.htm). Try to find a car that has good maintenance records. Shop for a good price (check around as you can find good values with the 960s as well as highly overpriced examples). And when you buy it bring it up to speed with regard to maintenance items (see here for ideas on that:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HighMileageVehiclePrevMaint.htm). You'll hear different advice on model years, but 1996 on are the better years, I think).

The 850s have their own quirks. Check out an issue of Consumer Reports if you are going to consider an 850; there are some years that are better than others.

Another thing to consider is the later model 940s. Bullet proof 4 cylinder engine, sluggish but not bad power; generally nice ride; safe car; non-interference engine; parts easy to get.

Hope this helps.

Mike
