I just replaced my 940 entire headliner last week, but won't be of much help since I had the same question. As you say the sun roof panel is not flat, so you have to only put glue on the high edges (which is hard to do with a spray can), and pull it across. Mine did not tear, but it is not as tight as I had wished, and can see some of the shaped of the metal underneath. It all looks greate except for the sun roof.
I have thought about re-doing it an filling in the indented section with some foam, but don't know if that would affect the operation of the sun roof. I do know that 1/4" will bind the operation, since I tried that first and then had to go to the 1/8". I will say thought that my 740 that I bought used with a new header (they used 1/4"), does not look as good as my job on the 940.
Cheers,
