My wife had an '87 Cherokee 5 spd. 4.0L that we drove for over 10 years and 170,000 miles. Had a few sensors fail like TPS and IAC. A couple water pumps, a rear seal, several valve cover gaskets, a couple serpentine belts, an alternator and a few other things I can't remember. Did all the repairs myself!
A simple straightforward cast iron I-6 that internally was practically bulletproof, I'm sure with regular oil changes it would easily go to 250,000 but my wife wanted power door locks, windows and Automatic, so she is now driving a 2000 Grand Cherokee and of course with the 4.0L.
A V-8 makes no sense to me; 6 cyl.= 7 main bearings or 8 cyl.= 5 main bearings.
Which one is the most ridged design? Of course not everyone is into longevity.
