I was last on this board about a year or two ago and was lurking before that. Sometimes the car behaves oddly, which is why I come here to ask you brilliant folks.

I have an '88 740 GLE, N/A, with an AW-71 automatic (I THINK) and almost 300K miles on the odometer. The car is a daily driver and aside from the usual repairs (hoses breaking, stuff wearing out, etc.), it has been free of problems. BUT today there was a problem: I noticed that that car wasn't changing gears probably. When going from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3, the car goes through an extended neutral, upon which time the revs climb to around 4K, then settle when the next gear is actuated. Does that make sense? Typically there is a very small interval between gear changes when the tranny neutrals to change the gear, at least it seems that way, but it is very extended now.

I filled up on the tranny fluid (it was a little low), and the problem seemed fixed at first, but after a few minutes of driving, it was back to its problematic self. The tranny probably is not leaking, in case that crossed your mind. :)

I hope to hear from you as soon as possible, so I do not commit to any expensive repairs. Perhaps it's a fuse or the computer or something like that and will not warrant a new or reconditioned tranny and put me in debt. :(
