The relay in an 85 is actually a relay module. If you take it apart, you will find a printing circuit board with a timing circuit, and a relay which is soldered to the board. I could not find an exact replacement for the relay so I drilled a hole big enough to pass the 5 or 6 wires to an external relay. There is plenty of room in the door. You can get an external relay mounted for about $10 or less.
There is one catch, you have to be adept at soldering. It is hard to remove the old one. I use braided solder wick (available at radio shack) to remove the old solder. Then I soldered 18 guage wire to the new relay which has worked perfectly for a year now. The contacts on the Volvo relay get corroded and develop high resistance. You could have a problem with the timing circuit but not as likely as the relay.
Basically your options are:
1 Get one from the junk yard for a few bucks and hope it does not go bad too
2 Buy a new one for about $140
3 Repair the old one for about $10, I can get you the relay info if you want to go that route.
