Pull them off the car, and compress them by hand. they should both be about the same, and offer even resistance all teh way down. If they are gas charged, they should rebound at an equal rate. if a good deal of oil has leaked around the seal they are shot. If you compare good and bad ones side by side, you will be able to tell.
