The likely failure is a hole in a turbo air intake hose. The large rubber hoses from turbo to IC, IC to intake are the possible problems. A lot of times I have seen holes in the one at the discharge of the intercooler.
It'll never run right with an intake leak. It might just be less sensitive to it at the warm operating point. The main thing the fuel injection does is to add fuel, richen the mixture at low temps. It senses this using the engine coolant temp sensor.
