I've had your problem 200 1984

My 1980 had the kind of drive shaft you're describing. The rear half is actually two nested lengths coupled by a rubber sleeve. Supposed to reduce drive line noise.

but the rubber gradually shrinks with age. Mine didn't rotate but it developed a shudder that couldn't be eliminated because the two parts would get a bit out of line whenever you torqued it up.

Eventually I ditched the rear half for a "plain" unit. I also had the entire thing rebalanced. It was then ok except that the spline connection was a little loose between the original front half and the substitute rear half, so it STILL had just a wee bit of shudder.

I swapped only the rear because it was EZ off--EZ on. If I had it to do over I would have swapped out the entire unit.

Good luck.
