Thanks parsecs,
I've replaced the starter and the mechanic tells me the alternator isn't putting out enough voltage to keep the car from stalling so now that needs to be replaced.......
After looking at the old starter I noticed loads of oil and grease around the electrical connections, which may have impeded it's performance.
It started only after being tapped with a hammer but this may have also helped make a better electrical connection causing the starter to work.
I asked the mechanic if he cleaned the contacts and tried to restart before
replacing the starter but alas he didn't, so I'll never know if that may have had something to do with the malfunction. He says it does sound better
but I may not have needed to replace that.
I want to think I did as it has 195,000 miles on it but now I'm not so sure.
The warning lights did go off after replacing the starter though.
I'll have him check the wiring harness after I get the new alternator.
Thanks again for your quick response.
Sincerely,
Peter Carbone
