Dear chrissij,
After replacing the starter the mechanic said the alternator wasn't putting out enough voltage to keep the car running so I'm replacing that now.
I replaced the battery and cleaned those terminals before the starter went bad but I need to check the engine ground strap.
The other thing I noticed on the old starter was oil and grease all over the electrical connections.
I'm wondering how much that affected the starters performance
as I needed to tap the starter to get the car running. Could the tapping have made a better electrical contact ? I asked the mechanic if he cleaned the contacts and tried a restart before replacing the starter but he didn't, so I'll never know for sure how bad that starter was.
Thanks for your quick response.
Sincerely,
Peter Carbone
