Sounds like the symptom when main fuel pump is not performing up to par. The car just seems like it can't get enough gas, which is exactly what is hapening if the main pump is weak. They usually making a growling noise when going bad.

This can be aggravated by a bad in-tank pump. If the in-tank pump is not doing it's job, it can cause the main pump to work harder and eventually fail. I am sure you read many postings about the common problem associated with 1/2 tank or less of fuel. If your prblem shows up with 1/2 tank or less, I would propose that you consider changing both fuel pumps. If you replace the main pump and the in-tank pump is still bad, the new main can go out in short order. Don't ask how I know.

I also notice you didn't list replacement of the fuel filter. If the filter is old, or there is reason to believe that there may be dirt or rust in the fuel system change it first. I had a lot of fuel problems with an '82 240 that sat unused for a long period. Sitting unused promotes accumulation of moisture. Then as they say: "The rust is history". Ha. Ha. (It wasn't funny at the time.)
