Yes, my point exactly and the reason I suggested the various diagnostics above. I don't think you have a "time bomb" by any means but it is definitely time to start saving for the inevitable.

In case you are considering it, a junkyard engine may or may not be a good idea. If you have a local pick-n-pull (or various analog) with a decent return policy, and lots of time on your hands, and can resist "seeing what's in there" then that could work. As most B18 and B20 engines are pretty old by now it is not a good crap shoot but you could get lucky.

Another possibility if you have the room, is to get a decent core and do a "gradual" rebuild over the next year or so. The nice part of this is you can have a nice fresh engine ready to go when it is needed and you can "pay as you go." The bad part is you have plenty of time to over spend on bits and fiddles you may not need and may end up letting the current engine "go to the dogs" in anticipation of the new motor and find yourself with a dead car and half-built engine (one of those self-control/discipline things I have soooooo much trouble with).

In the short term, however, giving the old girl some love, good oil, and (perhaps) guide seals should allow plenty of time to make a decision and get going on it. Heck, tough as they are, you can probably get many thousands of additional smiles out of it!
