In-tank Fuel Strainer 140-160 1971

I have the fuel tank on my "71 1421E open and drained to check on the condition of the fuel gauge sending unit (needs to be replaced) and to knock out some rather serious dents. I screwed out the large plug under the fuel pick-up and expected some sort of stainer. What I can see is, what looks like, the bottom end of a 1/2 inch diameter cannister. I gave it an experimental tug, but it doesn't want to budge. Before I take more persuasive measures and break something, I figured I'd better check with those who've been there and done that. Should I just grab hold of that thing and do some twisting and janking, or is there a smarter way to get that strainer out, assuming that's what I'm looking at, or should I just leave it alone and rely on the after-pump filter to deal with the debris I may have knocked loose when I removed the dents? Fuel delivery was fine so far.
