I6 vs. V6 - who knows, it could be argued either way, that's why they came up with 'VR6' (which I think stands for V-inline 6 in German). They confuse the matter by calling my 12 valve version a 'DOHC'. Well there is one head, and there are two cams, but each cam does both intake and exhaust valves for a single bank, so it is more like a V6 SOHC engine.
Either way, look past that large intake manifold arching over the top of the engine and there is a quite petite valve cover and block underneath. It seems like most VW/Audi bellhousings are cast in one piece with the transmission case. One thing I wonder about are the 80's diesel Volvos that used 5 cylinder VW/Audi diesel engines and (sometimes) M46 manual transmissions.
