WIth all due respect to George, I'd say shitcan that generator, and put in a (Delco) alternator. Keep the dynamo around in case a future owner wants to put it back to original, but it would be a downgrade if anyone did...
Them generators are fine, but they are all so old now, and have so many miles, and have been rebuilt so many times, they are simply all worn out. Commutators worn out, and often internally shorted.... and there ain't no economical fix for that.
I've also had generators that tested fine, but would blow any known good regulator in teh matter of nano-seconds...and them regulators cost more than a good Delco.
Did you manually close them upper points in the regulator when it was running? Seems that makes it charge again... but its been a long time.
