Pointing down? Sounds like a safety reason perhaps? The one 940 in our fleet lives over the hills and through the woods, so I only have pictures to go by; unfortunately the photo of the rail I have must be hiding the shraeder valve.
I can't think of any reason not to fit anything meant for tires to the fuel pressure tap, and I think my generic shraeder-tipped gauge also has a rather inflexible straight-on connection at the end. I did adapt it to the LH M14 fittings, though I like Randy Starkie's adapter (using compression fittings) better.
