Draining differential on a 1987 740GLE

I asked my mechanic to drain and refill the differential in my 1987 740GLE and gave him the information I found on the FAQ about draining the differential by looseneing the bottom bolt. He said he did exactly that and that nothing drained.
I am assuming that the differential cover has to be removed in which case I will need a new gasket. Do all 1987 740 w/auto tranny use the same differentials?
