A low transmission fluid level will also make it slow to go into reverse (or first). Mine had a slow transmission fluid leak, and if I forgot to top it off, the motor would spin for a bit before engaging. Worth a look, since you don't want to be low on that fluid.

Of course, that wouldn't explain the stiff gas pedal.
