Engine hood gas strut replacement - 95 960

Well, both gas struts can no longer support the engine hood, so replacement is in order. Cdn prices - Volvo wants $142 each, local parts supplier $105 each (Sachs).... anything more economical that will still hold the lid open for a reasonable amount of time before failure happens again? What is the life expectancy of these struts anayeay?
