02 sensor, one wire or three wire? 200 1984

I just harvested a Volvo replacement engine wiring harness for my 1984 242, which our daughter drives. It is LH 2.0, and the replacement wiring harness also came from a 1984 240 with LH 2.0. It is the correct part number, 3515397. It is like the old engine wiring harness except it is set up for a three wire (heated) O2 sensor. The original engine wiring harness was set up for a one wire (non-heated) O2 sensor. Can anyone tell me why Volvo made the change?

I am going to use the one wire O2 sensor for the time being. I can't imagine any difference besides cold operation.
