444 defrosters are everything but efficient, as you say. My '52 PV444 must be one of the first that had a factory heater fitted, but even with an added optional extra defroster motor (see http://www.geocities.com/vegteg012003/444defrostermotor.JPG) -which I had converted to 12V as well- there's hardly any heat arriving at the windscreen. Never thought of taking the ashtray out though...
