OEM exhaust configuration

My 745 Turbo has had the over axle pipe replaced with a 1.75 pipe. This is causing excessive restriction, so I plan to replace either it or the whole system. I can get the whole system for only fractionally more money than having my stainless guy bend me a new pipe, but I have a few questions. First of all, is the front muffler simply a straight through resonator? I've heard spoken of people removing this and replacing the rear muffler with a high performance one, but that seems a little backwards if the front is already straight through. Second is a question for you Turbo owners. My experience with Turbos is historically a SAAB one, but can you hear the Turbo in a car in good repair with the stock exhaust? Call this silly, but while I don't want to hear the exhaust pulses, the Turbo music is addictive to me. Has anybody tried going from the front muffler straight to the tail? I'd assume the Turbo will mute the exhaust pulses. If it wasn't for the badge and the torque, I wouldn't think this car had a Turbo. Is the undersized piping restricting the sound, or is it the second muffler?
