Was/is this an OEM from Volvo thermostat? The reason I ask is that I've had several thermostats, mix of Volvo and BMW, fail on me in the last couple of years but they all failed by overcooling the engine. Maybe the latest German car stuff is designed to "fail-safe"?

'96 965, 16' wheels, 18mm rear bar & 204HP cams at 122K. Had '85 745 Turbo Diesel for 200K.
