Cooling/Fan Problem...How often does this happen?

Every time the motor mounts get bad enough to let the engine shift.

Your check of clearance between the oil filter and the right side motor mount is a good one. change at least that mount REAL QUICK.

In fact, do that before you do any of the other items you listed. The left motor mount and tranny mount are likely old and failing too, but they can be for another day.
