I hear you. I lived for years in SoDak, EastWash and NNev without a garage.
Ah, modern volvo mechanic. I say if he's happy to have you bring him parts then he has already earned a level of trust. You should have no difficulties.
Most mechanics would love to show you exactly what is going on with your car but those darn insurance gremlins start to gather when a car is on a lift (not to say I've not had a few tours). I didn't say it is impossible to find those to work with you, just hard. When people bring in junk they got for a "great price" or "less than half what you quoted" I can see their reluctance.
I suppose what it boils down to is a decent relationship. Hey, my car is as important as my teeth (especially at 75 mph in the middle of nowhere) and I don't go to just any hacker dentist!
But I do 90% of my own work so...
