1989 740GL Start Problem PLEASE HELP 700

THis problem is killing me any help is appreciated. Normally it starts and runs great. Sometimes at first start of day I run into a problem. If it stalls at first start up I may have to wait up to 3-4 hours to start again. This has happened about 4 times in the past 3 months. I changed the plugs that helped a bit but it happened again today. To prevent the problem I give it plenty of gas at first start and rev it pretty good then it goes into a good idle and will be fine the rest of the day starting. But if the engine gets gas and does not acheive that idle I am doomed. What should I check first?
