1989 740GL Start Problem PLEASE HELP 700

Not sure why, but this happens to a lot of 740's of about this vintage. They flood in cold weather and are pretty stubborn about restarting.

I think the real cause is leaking fuel injectors or failed fuel pressure regulator (failed to high pressure). In any case, you CAN fix it from within the car. Sort of. Kind of annoying but it'll get you going.

Remove the ashtray and cig lighter/coin tray thing. In the front left of the fuse box, unplug the fuel pump relay. See the 700FAQ for fuse/relay locations. This will let you crank the engine without floodign it further. Keep cranking, with your foot on the throttle, until it clears out and fires. It's going to die again after a few seconds, once the gas is gone.

Replace the relay, and it should be able to fire up normally. That'll get you to work on time, anyway, until you can pursue the other things.

Also, if this has happened a few times, you've probably got a lot of gas diluting your oil. Pull dipstick and smell for gas smell. Change the oil soon. Gas is a poor lubricant.

Good luck man!
