When you say they won't work, do you mean the motor makes no sound and you hear no parts moving? Or do you hear things moving, but the blades themselves just don't move. From my experience with my daughter's 86, I think they are designed to strip the exterior wiper piece rather than ruin the motor when under too much load. If you hear the motor turning but the blades don't move, shut it off, take off the wiper blades, and see if the female connection where they fasten to the car is stripped.
