will the m46 fit?

short answer, no. the m45-46-47 have a different bolt patern to the bell housing, and has a different bellhousing. you could put one in if you were lucky enough to find the bell housing out of a 75' 240 w/ a b20 and m45. but the chance of that are very slim.

will the gas tank fit?

yes the 240 tank will fit in a 74' 140. is the tank in the 144 bad? the 240 tank will have a pre-pump.
