With each lobe pointing straight up, slide the feeler between the heel of the cam and the follower itself. If you have more than .012 inch (about .32mm), fine. If less, you should purchase a shim that is thinner by the amount of lash increase you need. A metric micrometer will be needed as the shims are sold in millimeter increments.
Just install the cam, set the timing belt on the sprocket, and roll the engine over by hand to check all the valves in turn. If you have to change shims, yank the cam out again. Easy.
