Installing 'A' grind cam, second post, another question.. 200 1986

I also did it the way Bob and Nate suggest. After measuring clearances and noting everything down, I pulled the camshaft and then the shims, individually, measured with my micrometer and put them back. On the back of my envelope it turned out that I only needed three new shims, as swapping others around would get everything within spec. Shims are only a few $$ at FCPGroton.

You don't need a metric micrometer. If your feeler gauge says .019 (inches) clearance and that valve's shim mic's at .153, you need a shim that's .156 to .159 thick to get the clearance into range. New shims come with their thickness etched on one face, in mm. Every one I've tried has mic'd out exactly as etched, but I still do the Ronald Reagan thing ("Trust...but verify").
