I think that kind of brake booster is not attached directly to the master cylinder. A hydraulic line just runs from the MC to the booster, which amplifies the signal with the vacuum power, and from there on to the brakes. Since they aren't a single unit you could put the booster anywhere, just like the early 122 boosters that sat on the inner fender.
