The ones on my 1986 are not the same as the 1988, the inside teeth differ.
I got a "new" rubber cover by total blind lucky accident. Bought a complete with lock on eBay and lo and behold, the rubber ring would transfer to my old lock. Thus I got a nice ring, and no need for a locksmith to change for the old key.
My 1986 knob is ring free. Ugly but useable. I have given up on ringing it.
Perhaps IF the pieces remaining of the old ring are large, AND using the dip for insulating tool handles could seal the pieces together, you could produce a reasonable facsimile of a new ring.
Good Luck,
Bob
