Generic O2 Sensor? 900 1994

I had O2 sensor codes on my B230F 240, I bought a Borg Warner 'universal' sensor that cross matched from autozone, $50, I had to splice it onto the end of my old harness, came with instructions and the waterproof heat shrink crimps. Worked fine for about 500 miles then it broke. No sensor codes, just rich idle and BAD fuel economy. Put in an OEM and it keeps on going...
