Knocking during acceleration 200

There's engine 'knock' and there's 'ping' Knock indicates detonation which can quickly cause catastrophic failure of pistons and/or rings. It's pretty unusual - you have to have a number of things out of whack on a N/A engine to cause it. Turbos can knock/detonate with very little 'wrong'.

Ping is another matter, it's quite common. It usually results from a bit of carbon in the cylinders and low-octane gas like unleaded regular. It's an intermittent metallic rattle when using a lot of throttle...sort of like "tink...tink,tink...tink". Our 83 does this under very heavy throttle in hot weather...I'm OK with it, as occasional light pinging won't hurt anything and indicates the ignition timing is advanced far enough for best power and economy under 99% of conditions.

If you are hearing a regular knocking noise under hard acceleration it's not a good sign. Try it in top gear so that RPM does not change quickly and see if you can narrow it down to engine knock/ping or something else. If your engine mounts are failing, the torque demands under accel. may be making it move enough to vibrate on a body or crossmember part.
