Howdy, from a previous post I described a metalic rattling comming from in front of my feet after starting the car, which continued while driving.

After turning it off to check it. It wouldn't start and was obvious that the starter was not engaged with the flywheel.

I expected a handful of broken teeth from the starter or flywheel gears, but find no sign of missing or damaged teeth on either.

What was the source of the rattling, and is the starter probably still good?

I guess I'll have to get it tested at a rebuild shop.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
