I would definitely suspect an electrical issue first. Very low oil can cause low pressure if the pump is sucking air. Overfilling the crankcase can also cause damage and, I suspect, smoke coming from the tailpipe. Check your wiring and grounds very carefully and trust the pressure gauge rather than the idiot light.
