cooling problem 200 1986

My daughter's 1986 240 wagon is confusing me. She drove from Eastern Washington to Western Washington. She went up over the pass fine and stopped on the downhill side for some coffee. Her temp gage was up near hot after she started again and didn't want to cool down. Heater on, fan blowing it would go down pretty fast, but heat up again.
I had just installed a new fan clutch (much thinner than the old one) a few weeks ago. I also put a new thermostat in it today. Went for a test drive and all was well. Stopped to get gas and temperature gage is up high and stayed there for 4 or 5 miles of driving then suddenly dropped down.
She headed back to college tonight but less than half an hour away the temperature gage was high again so she headed back to home. After she turned around and headed toward home the temperature was fine.
Immedeately when she got home I went out and spun the fan. It spins just as easily as my fan that is cold. How does one check the fan function?
There is a very small leak in the radiator which I think is actually the lower hose connection. I will check in the day light tomorrow. Yes it has plenty of coolant.
I am confused about the overheating then fine then overheating thing as well as the "continued for too long" hot after stopping.
