cooling problem 200 1986

I had the same problem on my 85.

I agree with Tomb. Its probably the Temp. compensator board.

I had replaced the rad., fan clutch and the thermostat in 2003, then in the summer of 2004 the temp started to do what you describe but the engine didn't show signs of overheating. I was on a 500 mile trip and so I pulled in to a parts house and bought another thermostat and replaced it at a carwash. The temp was still very erratic after the replacement. I decided that it had to be the gauge. It finally stopped working (the gauge) all together and I have yet to repair it even though I obtained two boards from the junk yard. They need to be re-soldered (see archives) before I install it.

Search the archives for the repair of the comp. board. There are pics somewhere that show what and where it is.
